Chinese authorities have sentenced two former defense ministers, Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, to death on charges of corruption and serious disciplinary violations, state media Xinhua reported on Thursday.
However, Beijing has also imposed a condition on the decision. According to Chinese authorities, if the two former officials behave well over a two-year period, the death sentence could be replaced with life imprisonment.
Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu were expelled from the Communist Party of China in 2024. Authorities accused them of “serious violations of discipline,” a term commonly used in China for cases of corruption at the highest levels of the state.
The case is considered another blow to President Xi Jinping's campaign against corruption within the Chinese military and state structures.
