The US Secretary of State, once known as a Republican "hawk" on foreign policy, is trying to defend President Trump's line even as the administration's positions change from day to day.
Long considered a hardline Republican during his tenure as Florida senator, Marco Rubio has struck a delicate balance: aligning himself with Donald Trump's positions while simultaneously suggesting that he also maintains his own political profile.
According to an analysis by French media outlet Le Monde, Rubio is performing a difficult political maneuver: to project the image of a calm and competent official, while being a key part of an American administration that is often perceived as chaotic and unpredictable.
On Tuesday, May 5, the US Secretary of State held a major press conference at the White House, focused primarily on the Middle East. Replacing spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt, Rubio, who also serves as President Trump's national security adviser, confirmed his ability to defend the coherence of a policy that often seems contradictory.
During his statement, Rubio said the US president had "answered the calls" of many countries to guarantee the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to him, the objective of the "Project Freedom" operation was to rescue about 23,000 civilian sailors from 87 different countries who were stranded on these ships.
However, this "first step" towards reopening the strategic maritime corridor was immediately called into question by Donald Trump himself. The US president suspended the initiative, arguing that negotiations with Iran were progressing positively.
According to Le Monde, this move reflects Trump's familiar style: rapidly changing political course from one moment to the next, while the administration continues to give ambiguous signals to allies and opponents.
