Are the ongoing Ukrainian drone attacks threatening Russia's control of Crimea? That's the question that's starting to be asked as the relentless campaign of attacks on transportation routes in Ukraine continues.

In recent weeks, Kiev forces have repeatedly attacked supply lines supplying the peninsula, which Russia seized in 2014. Particularly under pressure is the so-called “Highway of Death,” the 390-mile R-280 road that runs from mainland Russia, through occupied Ukraine, to Crimea.

Ukrainian Telegram accounts are full of drone-eye views of trucks being shot down by Ukrainian UAVs.

And it seems to be having an effect. Ukraine claims that freight traffic has dropped by more than 70% along that route. Then there are the bridges.

Ukraine has struck a number of border crossings in and around Crimea, all apparently part of an effort to impede the flow of supplies entering the territory.

In Crimea itself, there have been reports of fuel rationing and food shortages, while the Ukrainian campaign has apparently begun to intensify.

Robert 'Madyar' Brovdi, commander of Ukraine's drone forces, vowed that Ukraine would "isolate Crimea in the near future" and warned of more attacks to come.

Experts say Russia's control over Crimea is not yet under threat, but any move to reinforce the peninsula could show that Moscow is worried.

Crimea is still recognized by the West as part of Ukraine. Any serious threat to Russian control is likely to be a useful bargaining chip for Kiev in any future peace negotiations.
