Today, on the last day of the G7 summit in France, leaders of the most industrialized countries expressed strong optimism for a "real success" in cooperation with US President Donald Trump regarding the war in Ukraine.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described it as "the first time" since Trump took office that a joint statement was reached at the G7 summit, where common ground was found on key foreign policy and security issues.
“ In the statement issued this morning, the G7 celebrated Ukraine's recent progress in the fight against Russia and stressed that 'now there is a new moment'. I consider this a real success ,” Merz said during the press conference in Evian-les-Bains.
He added that this statement sets a new tone of cooperation, including transatlantic unity and resolve. The joint statement condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine and supports Kiev's efforts to defend its sovereignty, marking stronger coordination between the US and European allies.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney echoed the same optimistic sentiment. He said he has noticed "a change in attitude from the United States and President Trump."
" There is a position that is tougher on Russia and more realistic, in our view, about the situation on the ground ," Carney said.
European leaders have shown a greater ability during Trump's second term to find the right language and win his support, avoiding direct confrontations and focusing on common interests.
The G7 summit in France is expected to conclude with a final statement that is expected to reaffirm sustained support for Ukraine, while allies aim to maintain transatlantic unity in the face of current geopolitical challenges.
