Besnik Koçiu, suspected of wounding, was isolated by decision of the Tirana Court in detention center 313, but before he had even completed 10 days of being in custody, he passed away.
The Tirana court did not consider the lawyer's claims for a lighter security measure, even though Koçiu had serious health problems and his life was in danger.
"He had serious health problems. He should not have spent even a moment, even an hour, in detention, where they left him and did not take any measures for his health."
He suffered from a stroke, ischemia, diabetes, and many other illnesses.
"We presented all the documentation related to our brother's health, but they didn't take into account what was done with him," said Eranda Sejdini.
Family members claim that during the 5 hours Besnik showed health problems, was not given assistance and was kept isolated in a separate cell.
When asked who she sees as responsible, Eranda Sejdini replied: without a doubt, the state. I personally think that some of the people who were competent there, who did not provide first aid, are responsible.
Meanwhile, Besnik's brother, Maksim Kociu, said: "They have neglected many things with my brother, from prison, to court. They have not given him any kind of help."
The family has filed a criminal complaint with the prosecutor's office and is demanding a full investigation into the incident and the punishment of those responsible.
"We demand that the cameras be turned on and that justice be served to the end. At least we know how our brother died. We have no answer from the state about what and how happened in that detention," said Eranda Sejdini.
Besnik's brother said he will not stop until he finds the truth about his brother.
"I will not stop until I find my brother's rights. Responsibility begins with the court, which did not take into account any kind of thing. How do these people judge, a judge and a prosecutor. From this, I demand justice. I want to see the cameras, I want my brother's file, everyone to take responsibility for what happened," he said.
Besnik Koçiu was arrested on July 12, 2025 on suspicion of wounding with a sporting weapon.
On the 15th, the court set the security measure of arrest and imprisonment for him and he was placed in detention facilities and a week later lost his life. / BalkanWeb /
