Seeking freedom/ The Supreme Court sets the date for reviewing Erion Veliaj's appeal
The High Court is expected to review on May 28 the appeal filed by Mayor Erion Veliaj, who is seeking to replace the security measure of “prison arrest” with a lighter measure.
Veliaj has been held in prison arrest since February 10, 2025. SPAK has filed 13 charges against him, including passive corruption, money laundering, failure to declare assets, abuse of office and bringing prohibited items into prison.
His request comes at a time when the Joint Panels of the Supreme Court have reviewed a unifying decision from 2011 regarding the security measure “prison arrest” and its duration.
The new decision, taken unanimously, determines that the most severe measure of restriction of personal freedom should be imposed only after other security alternatives have been previously considered. It also requires a detailed justification for each specific case, while the burden of proof lies with the prosecution to justify the need to impose the extreme measure.
"It is requested that the security measure "Arrest in prison", provided for by Article 238 of the Criminal Procedure Code, be replaced with a milder security measure such as "Property guarantee" provided for by Article 236 of the Criminal Procedure Code or "Obligation to report to the judicial police", provided for by Article 234 of the Criminal Procedure Code", states Veliaj's request.

PL leader Ilir Meta has reacted after the next session at the GJKKO, where the trial on the merits against him is taking place. Meta said that the prosecution has dismissed the main charge, which, according to him, was related to the claim of a $1 million lobbying for a photo with former US President Donald Trump.
Meta stated that the prosecutor admitted in the hearing that it was a payment of $15,000 to the McKeon Group company, a payment that he said he had publicly declared to SPAK three years ago.
He also attacked the foreign media outlets Mother Jones and Kronen Zeitung, claiming that the articles against him were sponsored "with the money of incinerators and the international mafia."
According to Meta, these publications were the basis for the criminal complaint and accusation that led to his arrest and political isolation for 19 months.

Erion Braçe është lënë sot jashtë një mbledhje të mbajtur nga dega e Partia Socialiste në Njësinë 5. Braçe është deputeti i asaj zone, por si duket pas kritikave, nuk preferohet të jetë i pranishëm.
Ka qenë vetë Braçe që ka folur në media, ku ka deklaruar se e kanë lënë jashtë mbledhjes.

During his speech, Braçe stated that it is normal to have debates related to the way power is exercised.
According to him, these debates do not and should not cause any concern. He stated that for a long time now, discussions have not taken place in the SP group, but laws are simply passed on the sidelines.
