The Special Court has postponed the preliminary hearing against Ilir Meta and his co-defendants to December 22.
The reason for the postponement was the absence of the defendant's lawyer, Fatime Kryemadhi.
The former President is accused of "corruption", "money laundering" and "hiding assets".
The previous session was also postponed due to the absence of the parties to the proceedings and the judge in the case.
The court ordered SPAK to give Meta the file folders.
The former president also requested that he not stand in the cage in the courtroom, considering it a violation of constitutional rights.
Meta has been in prison since October 2024. He is charged with the criminal offenses of "Passive corruption of high-ranking state officials or local elected officials" in 3 cases, two of which were committed in collaboration, "Laundering of the proceeds of a criminal offense or criminal activity" committed in collaboration, "Refusal to declare, failure to declare, concealment or false declaration of assets, private interests of elected persons and public servants, or of any other person who has a legal obligation to declare", provided for in articles 260 and 25, 287/2 and 257/a/2 of the Criminal Code.
SPAK's file on Meta
SPAK accuses Meta of corrupt influence for episodes related to the CEZ-DIA case, in an interconnection agreement, as well as for a suspected corrupt relationship for changing a law in favor of businessman Samir Mane. According to SPAK, similar charges also weigh on Monika Kryemadhi. Meta and Kryemadhi deny the charges.
According to SPAK, Meta is accused of passive corruption in three cases, two of which in collaboration. His ex-wife, Monika Kryemadhi, has been charged with passive corruption in two cases committed in collaboration. The ex-spouses are also charged with the criminal offenses of “Laundering the proceeds of a criminal offense or criminal activity” committed in collaboration, “Refusal to declare, failure to declare, concealment or false declaration of assets, private interests of elected officials and public servants, or of any other person who has a legal obligation to declare”. Kryemadhi’s mother and the defendant Ema Çoku are accused of money laundering, while Xhixho is charged with passive corruption committed in collaboration.
SPAK explains that the proceedings against Meta and the other defendants began in 2019 and were expanded in subsequent years based on various reports. In 2024, all separate proceedings were merged into a single one.
"The investigations revealed a series of corrupt schemes, the use of political influence and power to favor certain businesses in return for rewards received or promised, laundering the proceeds of crime, and concealing assets or failing to declare significant expenses in periodic asset declarations," the announcement states.
Since October of last year, former President Ilir Meta, who currently holds the position of the chairman of the Freedom Party, has been in prison, after the court accepted SPAK's request to impose the personal security measure of "prison arrest" on him. Meta and the other defendants have publicly denied the charges as politically fabricated.
