Public transport in Tirana reduced by 40%, citizens face delays and traffic jams

The public transport sector in Albania has entered a difficult phase, while from today the implementation of the 40% reduction in the bus fleet in Tirana has begun, according to the announcement made the day before by the operators' associations.

The decision was immediately reflected on the ground, where numerous delays and a significant increase in the flow of citizens at stations were reported.

Dozens of people have been forced to wait long for transportation, while some have encountered difficulties arriving at their destinations on time.

The National Association of Urban Transport and the Association of Urban and Interurban Transport argue that this measure is a result of the lack of institutional response to their demands, especially to cope with the increase in fuel prices. According to them, no compensation scheme has been approved so far and there is no concrete plan to alleviate the financial burden.

"This lack of reaction and concrete action has significantly worsened the financial situation of the operators, who are already in extremely difficult conditions to cope with the continuation of the activity. Consequently, we inform you that, starting tomorrow, we will reduce the number of vehicles in circulation by reducing the fleet in the public transport service by 40%, as a mandatory measure to cope with this emergency situation," the associations declared.

Operators point out that, despite previous discussions with institutions, including a meeting on April 1, 2026, no concrete decision has been made to support the sector. They also raise concerns about the lack of steps to review fiscal elements such as excise duty, sales tax and VAT, which directly affect operating costs.

Meanwhile, the associations express their openness to dialogue, but demand immediate and effective intervention. They call on citizens to understand and plan their movements in advance, given the reduced service.
