"We do not ask for permission for our language", students march

Students from the University of Tirana and the University of Pristina have launched a march in the capital, in support of Albanian students in North Macedonia who are demanding the right to take exams in the Albanian language.

With the motto "Albania is with Skopje", young people gathered at "Skënderbej" Square and then marched towards the Embassy of North Macedonia in Tirana.

During the rally, a student from North Macedonia gave a strong speech in defense of the Albanian language, emphasizing that it is an inseparable part of the Albanian national identity and cannot be questioned.

"They told us that we are alone, that we will get tired! They were wrong! Who spoke for you, who speaks for us, they remained silent? When the day comes to choose between the chair and the mother tongue, they choose the chair! Not us, we do not remain silent. The Albanian language is our memory, the legacy left to us by generations that never bowed down," he said.

He emphasized that the Albanian language has been the element that has kept Albanians alive throughout the centuries, despite invasions and divisions.

"Language kept us alive when empires came and fell. Language united us when they divided us. Today they tell us we have to ask permission to use it? No, never! We have no chairs to protect! We only have our language!", the student continued.

According to the protesters, the issue that started as a problem for law students has now become a national issue.

"What started as a problem of colleagues in the judiciary is today turning into a national problem. We are not asking for privileges, only equality and respect for what is ours," he said.

The students declared that the protest is not political in nature and called on people with political beliefs not to join the march. They warned that they will not withdraw until the conduct of exams in the Albanian language is guaranteed.

"Today we have only one message: we are one and we will remain so! Together in every challenge, in defense of identity and language!", the students say.
