Security expert and former head of the State Police, Shemsi Prençi, made strong accusations on the podcast "Të Pashoq" regarding the phenomenon of call centers in Albania, stating that the activity has flourished for more than a decade with the knowledge of state institutions and under pressure from international partners.
Prençi said that the economic damage caused to European citizens by fraudulent call center schemes is many times greater than the pyramid scheme of 1996-1997 in Albania.
" Through call centers, staggering amounts of money have been stolen from citizens of the European Union. Experts are talking about 3 to 5 billion euros. This phenomenon has flourished for over 10 years in Albania, with the knowledge of law enforcement authorities, intelligence services, police, prosecution and the Albanian government. This problem has been raised with ministers and the prime minister in meetings with the European Union, because it has been a serious concern for citizens of European countries ," declared Prençi.
He said that the strongest attacks on call center networks were not carried out by Albanian institutions, but by international partners.
" No one put water on the fire for the call centers until the partners themselves came to Albania and had the exact locations of all the centers where the activity was taking place. The most serious attacks were made at the initiative of the partners from Germany and Spain. The Albanian authorities never took the initiative to seriously crack down on this phenomenon ," he said.
Prençi stated that names connected to government and public figures were also discussed at this event.
" There have been rumors about public figures. There has been talk about Amant Josifin, the prime minister's brother and others. If there is concrete material, as is said to have come from German authorities, and the State Police steps down as soon as the name of a high-ranking official or a person connected to power is mentioned, then it can no longer be called a law enforcement institution ," declared the former head of the Police.
According to Prenç, the most serious problem is the fact that the law is implemented with different standards.
" You cannot arrest a citizen for two grams of hashish and not dare to put handcuffs on him when you are faced with names linked to politics or people with political support. This means that the law is applied with double standards and this is unacceptable for a country that claims to enter the European Union ," he said.
Prençi added that recently the police have begun to crack down on some of these phenomena, while also mentioning operations against gambling and call centers in various areas of the country.
