The urban transport service in Tirana may face serious restrictions or blockages starting Monday, following warnings from operators of major financial difficulties that are jeopardizing the continuity of bus lines.

Activist and sector representative, Kostandin Foni, stated that the situation arose after the lack of response from relevant institutions, despite repeated requests from transport associations, following the increase in fuel prices.

He said that operators warn that the next week will be decisive for the fate of urban transport in the capital, raising concerns about a possible blockage of the daily movement of citizens if an emergency agreement is not reached.

"The blockage comes from the lack of reaction or failure to take measures by the relevant institutions. We as an association have exhausted all the links so that our voice reaches the responsible institutions, so that it does not reach this point.  The operators are faced with the fact that they do not have the financial means to continue transportation. Next week is crucial, either they will pay the salaries of the employees or they will be supplied with fuel.

"We have sat at the table and asked for help from the institutions, we have asked for the reactivation of the emergency package, compensation for the added value per liter of fuel.  Employees have not yet received their February salary, while their expenses have increased with the increase in prices," he told "News 24".
