France captain Kylian Mbappé has gone viral with his behavior in the convincing 4-1 victory over Norway.
His unusual gesture towards English referee Michael Oliver has been widely commented on on social media.
In the 87th minute, when the French striker was replaced by Jean-Philippe Mateta. According to new FIFA rules, a substituted player must leave the field within 10 seconds, otherwise the player entering the field must wait an additional minute.
Instead of leaving immediately, Mbappé approached referee Michael Oliver with the captain's armband in his hand and, with gestures, asked him to hand it to midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni. Only after the referee took the armband did the French star slowly leave the field, while Mateta immediately entered the game.
The footage went viral on social media, with many fans humorously reviving the nickname "dictator" for Mbappé. "Mbappé is giving orders to the referee too. He will never escape accusations of being a dictator," wrote one user, while another commented, "Now even referees take orders from Mbappé."
This is not the first time the French captain has been criticised for his take-charge approach. During the World Cup, he was seen instructing stadium staff during a weather-related stoppage, as well as leading his teammates during training sessions.
Despite the controversy his gesture caused, France continues its journey towards the round of 16 as one of the main favorites to win the World Cup.
