I'm tired of illegal immigrants invading my land and Britain offering them benefits... I'm taking matters into my own hands.
Brandishing his shotgun, 71-year-old farmer Chris Gadsden says he's so tired of illegal immigrants entering his land that he's decided to take action himself.
The great-grandfather, nicknamed "Farminator" for his tough approach, has long faced people who hide in trucks to cross the Channel and then leave when they stop at service areas near his home.
Last week, Chris found six Iraqis on his property, the first time he has encountered people from this Middle Eastern country.
But he fears there will be more cases as families flee ongoing tensions in neighboring Iran.
The issue of immigration is a problem that has persisted for decades.
In 2015, it was reported that, despite being located more than 100 miles from the coast and in the heart of rural Bedfordshire, Chris and his dogs regularly encountered asylum seekers jumping from lorries at Toddington Services.
This is often the first stop for drivers travelling north on the M1 motorway, after arriving at British ports, including Dover.
In the past, Chris has reacted violently in moments of panic, drawing his gun and even tying up people until the police arrived to arrest them. Sometimes he would drive them to the police station himself in his van.
Now, as a new wave of immigrants passes through his 15-acre farm, he says he has no choice but to resume patrolling alone, even though age is no longer in his favor.
" I'm not young anymore," he says, adding, "I've had a knee operation, I'm waiting for another one, and I also have high blood pressure. But if I don't do something, who will? The government is clearly not going to act, so I have to step in. The situation is out of control. I just see it as my contribution. I'm doing what I can to help the country. I'm not getting any younger, but this is very important."
"'Farminator' is back"
Chris's property, where he lives with his wife Lianne, 67, borders the Toddington Services lorry park. The father-of-four has been at odds with migrants since he bought the property in 1987. But Chris, who has also encountered people from Somalia, Afghanistan, Syria, Albania and Vietnam, says he doesn't enjoy the tough approach.
He insists he is only doing it to protect his family and is willing to use the gun again.

Chris ka gjetur gjithashtu rroba dhe furnizime të fshehura në tokën e tij, ndoshta të vendosura paraprakisht nga rrjete kontrabande. Në vetëm një javë në vitin 2015, ai ndihmoi policinë të kapte më shumë se 30 persona të dyshuar nga Somalia dhe gjashtë vietnamezë që hynë në fermën e tij.
Që atëherë, ai thotë se deri në 300 emigrantë kanë kaluar nëpër tokën e tij. Madje, vitin e kaluar, në 30 raste të ndryshme, ai pa grupe deri në dhjetë persona, por nuk mundi të vepronte pasi ishte në rikuperim nga operacioni në gju dhe mendoi se policia do t’i kapte.
Megjithatë, ai mendon se policia nuk po e trajton në mënyrë të mjaftueshme problemin, ndaj ndihet i detyruar të ndërhyjë vetë.
“Situata po përkeqësohet. Javën e kaluar ishte hera e parë që hasa emigrantë nga Iraku. Më duket se kjo do të përshkallëzohet, sidomos me atë që po ndodh aktualisht në Lindjen e Mesme. Fjala është përhapur në komunitetet e emigrantëve në Francë dhe Gjermani se Anglia është vend i lehtë, ku ofrohen përfitime, strehim dhe ushqim falas. Kjo është arsyeja pse vijnë. Nuk është ideale dhe nuk mund të vrapoj më nëpër fusha si dikur. Dhe për fat të keq, qentë me të cilët dikur patrulloja dhe që mund të gjenin njerëz, kanë ngordhur. Por do të jem vigjilent. Po e bëj këtë për fëmijët, nipërit dhe stërnipërit e mi, që të kenë një të ardhme. Sistemi është plotësisht i prishur. Të them të drejtën, më vjen të shkoj në Parlament dhe t’u tregoj çfarë po ndodh në vende si ky”, shprehet ‘farminatori’.
Ngjarja më e fundit ndodhi gjatë fundjavës së Pashkëve.
“U kthyem në shtëpi dhe pamë helikopterin e policisë mbi zonën e shërbimit, kështu që e kuptuam se diçka po ndodhte. Pastaj policia erdhi te porta e fermës. Djali im i lejoi të hynin dhe shkoi me oficerët për të gjetur emigrantët, që ndodheshin në një cep të fushës. Ishin gjashtë të rinj, 4 irakianë, dy në të 20-at dhe dy që dukeshin rreth 16 vjeç. Dy të tjerët u larguan, nuk e di çfarë ndodhi me ta.
Policia i solli në fermë dhe ata qëndruan të ulur në bar, shumë të qetë, duke pretenduar se nuk flisnin anglisht. Kishin telefona dhe euro, si dhe çokollata dhe ëmbëlsira. Është qartësisht e organizuar mirë.
Por erdhën pesë ose gjashtë makina policie dhe dy ambulance, me një kosto të madhe për taksapaguesit. Pastaj do të dërgohen në hotele ndërsa shqyrtohen kërkesat e tyre”, tregon ai.
Ai shton se emigrantët shpesh trajtohen më mirë se qytetarët britanikë.
"They were probably taken to Luton and Dunstable Hospital and put straight in for a check-up, in front of people waiting. I went there recently and waited from 8pm to 3.30am to be seen. Then I waited two days for a bed. What's fair about that?"
Chris believes the UK needs to reassess its priorities.
" I've worked all my life and I don't agree with this. My pension is meager, they've cut our heating allowance in the winter. It's a shame. I was supposed to have an operation this week, but it was cancelled because of the doctors' strike. It all seems so unfair ," says the 'farmer'.
However, he says he is providing basic assistance to migrants until authorities arrive.
" I gave water to young Iraqis. At the end of the day, we are all human. But if you entered illegally, you are not our guest. You should go back to your country. If you need asylum, you should do it the right way, not like this."
Bedfordshire Police confirmed that six men have been arrested in connection with the incident. The driver of the lorry was arrested around 70 kilometres away, at Watford Gap Services, and has since been released on bail.
The arrested persons have been handed over to immigration authorities.
The Home Office does not specify the number of migrants entering by lorry, but publishes data on "cases detected in the UK", i.e. when people are caught in vehicles at service areas or at the port of Dover.
Arrivals at British ports fell by 83% in the eight years to December 2025, to 181 people. But over the same period, small boats have become the main means of illegal entry into Britain.
A Home Office spokesman said: “We have promised to increase the removals and deportations of illegal immigrants and will do everything we can to secure our borders. Almost 60,000 illegal immigrants and foreign nationals with criminal records have left the UK since the 2024 election, a 31% increase compared to the previous 19 months.” /Adapted Pamphlet /
