The United States Embassy in Tirana has issued a warning to Albanian citizens traveling to the US on a tourist visa.
In an official announcement, the US diplomatic mission emphasizes that people who use a tourist visa to give birth in the US and who cover the costs of the birth through US public programs may face refusal to renew their visa in the future.
According to the embassy, some Albanian citizens travel to the United States on tourist visas and benefit from the Medicaid program to cover the costs of healthcare during childbirth. The announcement states that these expenses are covered by American taxpayers.
"Parents who use tourist visas to give birth in the U.S. may not be eligible to renew their visas in the future ," the U.S. Embassy said in a statement.
US authorities remind that a tourist visa should only be used for the purpose declared during the application. According to them, using it to benefit from public programs or in violation of the terms of the visa may affect future decisions on its issuance or renewal.
