Residents of several villages belonging to the municipality of Selenica, part of the Vlora district, rose up this Sunday morning in a peaceful protest at the entrance to the village road.
They are protesting the lack of a village road, which has been in a degraded infrastructural state over the years.
The road they are protesting is about 10-15 km long which connects more than 5 villages which are Velca, Matogjini, Bashaj, Vërmiku, Ramica.
Over the years, this road segment has not had any investment.
Residents are demanding the rehabilitation of the road segment. They are holding banners and making calls such as "We Want Roads", "We Can't Wait Anymore" or even "We Want Investments".
"This protest belongs to us and us alone. For 35 years this province has been a misery, in oblivion. How is it possible that for 35 years we have been forgotten, unappreciated, how is it possible that the local and central government are silent in front of us," said one of the protesters.
They also blocked the entrance road to the villages for several minutes as a sign of protest.
They say that the road investment was an electoral promise, but it has now been forgotten. Residents called on Prime Minister Edi Rama and the district's MPs not to come to the area only during campaign periods, making promises that are then not fulfilled.
"Several months passed and this remained in oblivion, where to believe, where to go and seek this right. The only option we have, we must protest until we choose our truth. Our peaceful protest is to cooperate with the local and central government to turn their eyes on us and make way for us. They are mocking us and want to mock us," said a resident.
In the protest, the residents expressed that they are satisfied with the Vlora River road that has been added, but dissatisfied with the government, which according to them has left these villages in oblivion. They emphasized that investing in this road would bring development to the area, turning these villages into economic opportunities and tourist attractions.
