According to the Police, Habilaj has been sentenced by the Court of Catania to 12 years, 2 months and 13 days in prison for the criminal offense of "Participation in an armed criminal organization with the aim of trafficking narcotics."
The State Police has published footage from the arrest of Moisi Habilaj, who was captured in a bar in Borsh during the operation codenamed "Methods".
The operation was carried out by the Vlora Local Police Directorate in cooperation with the Special Operational Force Directorate, after intensive investigative work to locate a person wanted by the Italian authorities.
As a result of the operation, it was possible to capture and provisionally arrest 48-year-old Moisi Habilaj, a resident of Babicë e Vogël, Vlora, with the aim of extraditing him to Italy.
According to the Police, Habilaj has been sentenced by the Court of Catania to 12 years, 2 months and 13 days in prison for the criminal offense of "Participation in an armed criminal organization with the aim of trafficking narcotics."
Meanwhile, the security measure "Arrest in prison" was also executed against him, imposed by the Serious Crimes Court in 2018, for the criminal offenses "Production and sale of narcotics", "Trafficking in narcotics", committed within a structured criminal group, as well as for the offense "Structured criminal group".
During the operation, 46-year-old Eduard Ahmeti, a resident of Saranda, was also arrested in flagrante delicto, while a 70-year-old Italian man with the initials SF, 70 years old, was prosecuted at large for the criminal offense of "Supporting the perpetrator of a crime."
Habilaj was arrested in 2017 by Italian police along with 11 other people. He was placed under house arrest by the Catania court, but when the Appeal Court announced the verdict, he disappeared from the apartment where he was staying and was on the run.
In January 2019, the Serious Crimes Prosecution Office concluded the investigation into Habliaj and the three other defendants. They were accused of having trafficked large quantities of cannabis to Italy over a period of several years, in collaboration with each other and other individuals.
The Special Court then sentenced Moisi Habilaj to 15 years in prison for drug trafficking and organized criminal group. Due to the summary trial, the sentence was reduced to 10 years in prison. The case was sent back for retrial by the Supreme Court, but the same sentence was again given.
Defendant Nezar Seiti was sentenced to 12 years and upon application of the summary judgment, his final sentence was reduced to 8 years in prison.
In the retrial of the case, the charges against the other two defendants, Maridjan Sulaj and Fatmir Minaj, were dismissed because they had been convicted by a final decision for the same criminal act.
Moisi Habilaj was previously sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Italian justice system for international drug trafficking. He had been wanted by the police for almost 10 years, but was only located in Vlora yesterday.
