Investigations into a suspected prostitution ring with an elite clientele in Milan are taking on ever-larger proportions in Italy, while well-known names from Italian football have also been mentioned in the investigative file.
According to Italian media, the Milan Prosecutor's Office has registered Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni as under investigation for "prostitution with minors". The investigations, however, also include dozens of Serie A and B footballers, whose names have emerged in wiretaps linked to the suspected network.
The Guardia di Finanza has announced that it has summoned for questioning three other well-known footballers: Riccardo Calafiori, defender of Arsenal and the Italian national team, Kevin Bonifaci, who recently left Bologna as a free agent, and Daniel Maldini, a striker who plays for Lazio.
According to published data, their names have been mentioned in messages related to the suspected criminal group. However, none of them is under investigation for any criminal offense and they will testify in their capacity as persons with knowledge of the circumstances of the case.
Italian legislation provides that using the services of an adult prostitute does not constitute a criminal offense, so authorities are focusing on clarifying the circumstances of the investigation and possible criminal liability.
