Michael Oliver has been appointed to referee the World Cup play-off final between Kosovo and Turkey, which will take place on March 31st at 8:45 PM.
The English referee, part of the FIFA list, is considered one of the most experienced referees in the international arena. He has previously been the protagonist in important matches, including the 2022 European Super Cup final, where Real Madrid defeated Eintracht Frankfurt with a score of 2-0.
For Kosovo, Oliver remains a relatively unknown name, as he has not refereed any of their matches before. The situation is different with Turkey, which he has refereed in three international matches.
The first match was in the European Championship qualifiers, where Turkey won 0-1 against Kazakhstan. He then refereed the World Cup qualifiers in March 2021, where the Turks triumphed 4-2 against the Netherlands. The most recent meeting with Turkey was in September last year, when Spain won 6-0 away.
Oliver also came under fire in England in January 2025 after receiving threats on social media, including to his family, over his decision to send Arsenal player Lewis-Skelly off.
