Julio Ariz "El Loco" Leiva, the technical director of Club Deportivo San Pedro, has left an indelible mark on Guatemalan football. His life, characterized by passion and dedication to sport, ended suddenly this Sunday, August 18, after an act of violence that darkened the sporting horizon of Huehuetenango.
Leiva and his team were in a restaurant near a gas station, preparing for the match against La Democracia club. The peace of the lunch was interrupted when a white vehicle pulled up in front of the bar.
Men wearing vests similar to those of the National Civil Police (PNC) and the Specialized Division of Criminal Investigation (DEIC) entered the premises of the institution. With a disturbing coldness, they demanded that they should speak to Leiva.
The technical director, known for his energetic nature and strategic approach, stepped up to meet the demand. The next few minutes turned into a nightmare. The peace of the place was broken by the sound of fifteen shots that left Leiva bleeding on the ground.
The distraught team members found their mentor dead as news of his death spread like wildfire.
Despite the quick intervention of relief and security forces, his fate was already sealed. Leiva's backpack, a constant in his daily life, was gone. This added detail to the tragic event has left unanswered questions.
