Elbasan ended its European adventure in the first round of the Conference League. In the yellow-blue team's debut on the international stage, the team was eliminated by BATE Borisov only after penalty kicks, in a match that ended with a lot of drama.
After a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Elbasan, Ivan Gvozdenović's team traveled to Azerbaijan confident of qualifying. They faced a BATE that is having a difficult season in the Belarusian championship, where they are also in danger of relegation.
However, on the field of play, Elbasan failed to show the expected potential in the attacking phase. The Yellow-Blues created few dangerous chances during the 120 minutes, while goalkeeper Aleksovski became the protagonist with several decisive interventions, keeping the Albanian team in the game.
With regular time and extra time ending in a goalless draw, the fate of qualification was decided by a penalty shootout. Elbasan was close to advancing to the next round, but Karrica missed the fifth penalty that could have secured qualification for the team. BATE took advantage of this moment, while Epito hit the crossbar in the ensuing minutes, sealing the yellow-blues' elimination and the end of their European dream for this season.
