The "curse" with foreign coaches continues, not even the 2026 World
Foreign coaches at the World Cup

The tradition of home-grown coaches at the World Cup remains intact. Following the elimination of England, led by German Thomas Tuchel, it has been confirmed that this year's edition will not produce a foreign world champion coach for the first time.

In the history of the 22 editions of the World Cup to date, all winning national teams have been led by coaches of the same nationality as the team they were managing. Italy's Marcello Lippi, Germany's Joachim Löw, France's Didier Deschamps and all other champions have had local coaches on the bench.

With Tuchel's England out of the competition, this statistic remains unchanged and the "curse" of foreign coaches is destined to continue at least until the 2030 World Cup. This edition's final will pit Luis de la Fuente's Spain against Lionel Scaloni's Argentina, two national teams led by local coaches.

Several foreign coaches participated in the 2026 World Cup, including Thomas Tuchel with England, Vincenzo Montella with Turkey, Carlo Ancelotti with Brazil, Fabio Cannavaro with Uzbekistan, Mauricio Pochettino with the USA, Julen Lopetegui with Qatar, Graham Potter with Sweden and Rudi Garcia with Belgium.

Although Tuchel's England reached the semi-finals, the German is not among the most successful foreign coaches in World Cup history. Only two foreign coaches have ever reached the final: England's George Raynor with Sweden in 1958, who were defeated by Pele's Brazil, and Austria's Ernst Happel with the Netherlands in 1978, who were defeated by Argentina. Neither of them managed to lift the most prestigious trophy in world football.
