Before becoming Milan director, with extensive experience in this role at Lazio, Igli Tare spoke about his way of working, the talents he saved from his hands and the future of this sport.
Tare revealed that Lazio had been very close to signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Kim Min-jae, but the transfers fell through for various reasons. In Kvarat's case, the conditions were not met, while Kim was blocked by his club in China. He also mentioned the failures to bring in Javier Pastore and Edinson Cavani, saying that these were matters of timing and club decisions.
Of the transfers that make him proud, he mentioned Gila, Keita Balde and Luiz Felipe, who were discovered by Lazio in the lower categories and became important players. Tare also praised Khéphren Thuram, saying that he has the potential to become a great player.
Let's start with Lazio. Were you still following it after you left as director?
Of course. At first I was a little distant, but I appreciated Baron's work. The team was mostly the same as the previous season and the new players were integrating well.
You've been at Roma for almost 20 years. Many strikes in the transfer market, but also some failures. Is there a player you could have brought to Lazio, but you didn't?
Many. One that comes to mind is Kvara. We had him almost closed, but the conditions were not created to finalize him. Another is Kim, everything was ready. He was playing in Beijing and suddenly the Chinese club decided not to sell him. I'm talking about things that happened at least two years before they went to Napoli.
Did the same thing happen to Javier Pastore?
It was a big loss, especially because I had just arrived at Lazio and it could have been my first shot. It was also included within the club's budget. Unfortunately, I trusted the wrong person, an agent who then proposed him to another team and they snatched him away from us. Another one is Cavani...
Tell us more about Cavani…
If things happen a certain way, there is always a reason behind them. We had seen Cavani first, but he received more important offers. It was a matter of time, but it could happen.
What about any shots you're proud of?
Eh… I could name many. I wouldn't want to do injustice to anyone, but I would say Gila, taken from Real Madrid's second team, or Keita Balde. Also Luiz Felipe, discovered in the Brazilian Serie D.
Now let's talk about the championship. Is there a player who has impressed you in Serie A?
Am I being subjective if I say Gila? No, no kidding, for me he will become a world-class defender. He has great qualities and is improving at a fast pace. Another one is Khéphren Thuram. I saw him years ago, when he was still a teenager, but he had the qualities of a great player. He will become great, he just needs to be more dangerous in the goal area.
There is more and more talk about the role of the sports director and new ways of the transfer market...
The world moves forward, evolves, and so does football. However, I believe that the principles of this profession remain the same: the eye and human relations. For me, this is the basis. Then, watching a lot of matches, researching, talking to the boys and their families. It's a job within a job.
