United States President Donald Trump said he believes his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, is feeling pressure and wants to end the war in Ukraine.
Responding to reporters' questions in the Oval Office, Trump expressed optimism about the progress of the talks, saying that the parties are closer to an agreement than is publicly perceived.
" I think he feels pressure. He wants to end this war and Ukraine wants to end it. We're in talks and we're going to see if we can end this conflict. It's a terrible thing ," Trump said.
The US president added that the recent phone conversation with Putin was positive.
" I think we are much closer to a solution than people think. President Putin really wants this war to end. We had a good phone conversation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also sincerely wants the war to end now ," he said.
Trump also confirmed that the war in Ukraine will be one of the main topics of the NATO Summit, which takes place this week in Ankara.
For his part, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that Russia continues missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities, emphasizing that allies must continue military support for Kiev.
" Russia continues to strike Ukrainian cities with drones and missiles. Just last night there was another heavy attack. I want to be clear: all allies must do their part to ensure that our support for Ukraine continues, because Ukraine's security is closely linked to our own security ," Rutte declared.
According to him, Ukraine has had better results on the battlefield over the last two or three months.
" Putin is becoming increasingly desperate ," the NATO chief added.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin announced that Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump have agreed to hold another conversation in the near future.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that contacts between the two leaders will continue, commenting on reports that they may speak again after Trump's expected meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Turkey.
" Yes, it is true that President Putin and President Trump have an understanding that their contacts will resume soon ," Peskov said, according to the Russian Interfax agency.
He added that, according to the Kremlin's assessment, Trump has a consistent position on the conflict in Ukraine and remains ready to listen to the arguments and information presented by the Russian president.
