Qualifying for a World Cup is a career-defining achievement for most coaches. To keep coming back in four-year cycles, with new generations of players and changing the landscape of football, is very rare.

Inspiring world champions or leading countries on different continents, repeated appearances on the biggest stage of football require a certain combination of character and talent.

Carlos Queiroz and Didier Deschamps are making another appearance at the World Cup, while FIFA has revealed the ten coaches who have been to the World Cup the most.

Six World Cups

Carlos Alberto Parreira has been to six World Cups. He led Kuwait in 1982, the United Arab Emirates (1990), Brazil (1994 and 2006), Saudi Arabia (1998) and South Africa (2010).
No coach has appeared at more World Cups than Parreira.

The Brazilian made his debut with Kuwait in 1982, and also captained the Emirates to their debut. Perreira's crowning moment was Brazil's triumph at the 1994 USA. It was Brazil's first title since 1970.

Bora Milutinovic was in five World Cups, with Mexico, Costa Rica, the USA, Nigeria and China.

Portuguese Carlos Queiroz is also at the World Cup for the fifth time. He managed Portugal in 2010, Iran in 2014, 2018 and 2022 and is now managing Ghana.

Four World Cups with one national team

Helmut Schon has a unique achievement – ​​four World Cups with a national team. He led West Germany to the 1966, 1970, 1974 and 1978 World Cups. 

With Schön, the Germans were in third place, second place and won the World Cup in 1974. He worked with a generation of stars and left a valuable legacy.

But France coach Didier Deschamps has also won four World Cups with the same national team. He has led France regularly at the global event since 2014. He will step down after the World Cup, which is being held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Deschamps won the World Cup as captain in 1998, and as coach he won the 2018 World Cup with France. He reached the next final in 2022.

Oscar Tabarez was in four World Cups with Uruguay, while Sepp Herberger was in the 1938 World Cup with Germany and then in the 1954, 1958 and 1962 World Cups with West Germany.

Henri Michel, Lajos Baroti and Walter Winterbottom also have four World Cups each as coaches.

Michel has managed France, Cameroon, Morocco and Ivory Coast. Baroti made history with Hungary, while Winterbottom with England.
