After months of debate, on Wednesday morning, what had been rumored for months was confirmed, as Red Bull decided to sack Christian Horner. His place in the team will be taken by Laurent Mekies, a classic of the "paddock" with a long career in the world of Formula 1.
Trained at ESTACA in Paris and Loughborough University, he began his career in Formula 3 and then as an engine engineer at Asiatech. He would soon make the big leap into Formula 1 with the Minardi team, a classic brand when it comes to launching great F1 careers. He held this position until the team took the name Toro Rosso in 2005.
Later, Laurent Mekies would make the jump to the other side of the paddock, to the FIA, as Safety Director, leading the “halo” project. He later served as deputy racing director until 2018, when he returned to the world of F1, working with Ferrari as sporting director.
Since January 2024, he has held the position of team principal at Racing Bulls, Red Bull's satellite team, where he will now replace Christian Horner. On the other hand, the position held by Laurent Mekies at the Racing Bulls team will be taken by Alan Permane, who will now take on the role of director.
