The Democratic Republic of Congo national team surprised England in the first half of the match, going into the break with a minimal 1-0 advantage in the match held at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Congo found the net in the 7th minute. After a long ball from Chancel Mbemba and a moment of uncertainty in the English defense, Brian Cipenga took advantage of a mistake by Djed Spence and beat goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for 1-0.
England responded and created several good chances to equalise. In the 30th minute, Jude Bellingham headed in a spectacular save from Lionel Mpasi-Nzau. Five minutes later, Marcus Rashford went close, but his effort was cleared off the line by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Congo also had the chance to double their lead. In the 42nd minute, Joan Uisa hit the right post, coming very close to scoring a second goal.
Late in the first half, England sought a penalty after a tackle in the area, but the referee ruled it a simulation. The incident was reviewed with the help of the VAR system, which confirmed the referee's decision not to award a penalty.
In extra time, Bellingham tried again with a header, but Mpasi-Nzau was once again decisive, keeping the goal intact. After the first 45 minutes, Congo leads 1-0 against England.
