He used to earn 7 million euros a year, but now he works at a construction site. Former Premier League star Danny Drinkwater has a new job. It is also the end of a deep decline.
He won the Premier League twice, once moved to Chelsea for over 37 million francs - and now works on a construction site.
On Monday, the 34-year-old posted a photo of himself on Instagram. It is surrounded by wooden planks and scaffolding. "Today at the construction site," he writes. He later uploads a video of himself driving the company car with co-workers. Laughing, with lunch on his knees.
But criticism doesn't take long to arrive. " Damn it, Danny, you've hit rock bottom ," wrote one follower. Drinkwater reacts publicly: "I like working on construction sites! This is a decision".
It is unclear whether Drinkuter holds the job at the construction site full-time or only part-time. According to English media reports, he earned over 135,000 francs – a week!
Despite what appeared to be a princely salary, Drinkwater was never able to match the performances during his time at Leicester. At the same time, he takes solace in alcohol and is caught driving drunk several times. Even in 2019, he caused an accident with injuries under the influence of alcohol.
" I was living in central London and I was alone. The easiest way is to go out and have fun, go to a bar and drink. At the end of the day, it doesn't solve anything. You just cover it up ," Drinkwater said last year.
The former Manchester United player has been loaned several times from Chelsea to Burnley, Aston Villa, Riding or even Turkey. He wouldn't be happy anywhere. He hopes for new offers, but they do not materialize. " I thought: What happened to me? "Have I lost so much that a bigger team doesn't want me for free ?" he said in "Sportbible" last summer.
In the end, the offers fell through, Drinkwater ended his career - and has now found happiness again on the construction site.
