On an emotionally charged evening, Diogo Jota's family is expected to be present at Anfield stadium, at the opening of the new season for Liverpool against Bournemouth.
This will be the first public appearance for Jota's wife, Rute Cardoso, and their three children, following the funeral of the striker and his brother, André Silva, who lost their lives in a tragic accident in June in northern Spain.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot, in a touching address for the official match programme, said: “As I have said before, the tributes that have been paid across the football world, particularly within the LFC community, have been truly extraordinary. I believe that tonight, Diogo’s wife, children and family will be at Anfield and it is important that as a club we show that they will always have our love and support as they deal with this irreplaceable loss.”
Jota's portrait will be on the cover of the match program, while his number, 20, is officially retired by the club in honor of his memory.
Since the tragedy, Liverpool have held a series of tributes to Jota, including a pre-season tour of Asia, a return to Anfield and the Community Shield final against Crystal Palace. The atmosphere at the club and in the city remains deeply affected, but it is his family who have suffered the most.
In another touching moment, midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has dedicated an emotional letter to his late friend in The Players' Tribune, sharing unforgettable memories from life on and off the pitch.
Anfield is expected to stand in silence ahead of today's match, in another moment of solidarity for Jota and his family.
