Wojciech Szczesny has issued a defiant but also admiring warning ahead of Sunday's El Clásico at the Santiago Bernabéu, where Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe will once again be pursuing the Barcelona goalkeeper as a popular target.
Speaking to Eleven Sports, the Polish veteran dismissed any notion of fear despite Mbappé's shocking record against him: eight goals in just five career meetings, including five last season alone.
"No, not fear, but a lot of respect," said Szczesny.
"Kylian is currently one of the best players in the world, if not the best, Andy and a constant threat in front of goal.
"He definitely has a talent to beat me too," he said.
With Barcelona forced to use Szczesny due to Joan García's meniscus injury, the stakes are much higher in a clash between the top teams in the table, where Real Madrid could open up a five-point lead over the reigning champions.
Mbappe, La Liga's top scorer with 10 goals and 2 assists in 9 games, arrives in top form - fresh from winning the September Player of the Month award from Real Madrid - and with a proven edge over Sunday's last line of defense.
"I don't think anyone else has come close to scoring so many goals against me in five games," Szczesny admitted. "It's a huge compliment to his quality."
