Sunderland have officially announced that Granit Xhaka will be the club's captain for the new season. The 32-year-old Albanian and Switzerland captain only joined the Premier League club a few weeks ago, but his experience and leadership have led the club's board to entrust him with the role of team leader, both on and off the pitch.
" A prominent leader on the domestic and international stage, the midfielder has previously taken on the role of captain at Borussia Monchengladbach and Arsenal. Xhaka also held the captain's armband on several occasions during a historic spell at Bayer Leverkusen and has been captain of Switzerland since 2020, with whom he has made 137 appearances ," the English club announced.
Meanwhile, Xhaka himself said that it is a privilege for him to show leadership both on and off the field.
" It makes me incredibly proud to be the captain of this club and this team. I hope to show my leadership on and off the pitch, helping my team-mates at the training ground and across the club. To be part of Sunderland's history, alongside some of the names who have carried the captain's armband before, is an honour. People who know me know exactly what they are getting, I am someone who demands a lot. I am a winner and I want to win and I expect the same from my team-mates ," said Xhaka.
Granit Xhaka signed a 3-year contract with Sunderland, leaving behind two seasons at Bayer Leverkusen and returning to the Premier League, where he was previously part of Arsenal.
