Somewhere 5 cows, somewhere 700 thousand euros, bronze only 7 euros, how much

The Olympic Games in Paris are around the corner (July 26 – August 11, 2024) and on this occasion the organizers have prepared exactly 5084 medals to be distributed to the best athletes in the world.

But how much are they worth financially? For any athlete, an Olympic medal is priceless. They are expensive even for collectors, but their value in the technical field is not so great. 'Gazzetta dello Sport' has already discovered how much the Olympic medals are technically worth, if the metals were melted.

The organizers of the Olympic Games in Paris made 5,084 copies of the gold, silver and bronze medals that await their new owners. What separates this year's Olympians from the past is the fact that each medal will include a piece of iron from the Eiffel Tower.

Each medal will use 18 grams of iron from the Eiffel Tower and parts that were used during previous restorations will be used, so they will not be removed from the current building. The gold medal weighs 529 grams, the silver 525 grams and the bronze 455 grams.

In Europe, only Serbia pays more than any other country, 200 thousand euros for the gold medal. At the top of the special ranking is Hong Kong, which values a single Olympic medal at 700,000 euros.

Then Singapore and Taiwan, countries that will give 550 thousand euros for the gold medal. But not only that, as the athletes will have a salary of 3700 euros per month for the rest of their lives.

France, the organizing country, stops at 80 thousand euros. What stands out is only the 34 thousand euros paid by the United States, a ridiculous amount when you consider that LeBron James, who carries the flag, has a stratospheric salary.

Great Britain, Sweden and Norway are among the countries that do not reward athletes who win Olympic medals. There are countries where the medal is given in the form of vouchers, such as Kazakhstan and China, which offer villas and apartments.

Poland gives jewelry to medalists or trips, while Indonesian athletes, three years ago, after their successes in Japan, received five cows, a restaurant and a brand new house.

Glory, money and privileges, because an Olympic medal is forever.

As for the gold medals, of course, they are not completely gold. Only in the Olympic Games in 1904, 1908 and 1912 were the medals made entirely of pure gold. After that, the International Olympic Committee established a norm that says that six grams of pure gold go for the gold medal at the Olympic Games. The remaining 523 grams used for the gold medal are silver with a minimum purity of 92.5 percent.

If you were to sell a gold medal from Paris by simply melting down the metal, you would get "only" 700 euros. By the same principle, if you melted the metals from the silver medal, you would get 400 euros.

The most interesting thing is that the value of the bronze medal is seven euros. It is clear that the alloy composed of copper and zinc has a negligible market value compared to gold and silver, but millions of athletes would give anything to get their hands on that medal, which is physically worth seven euros.
