However, Messi did not react or make any complaint to the referee about the incident. At the same time, the players' attention was focused on England's protests over an alleged foul on Eliot Anderson, causing the incident between Messi and Rice to pass without further consideration.
The match officials did not consider the situation to be an infringement requiring intervention, while the lack of a reaction from Messi meant that the communication between the two players was treated as a normal conversation. For this reason, the VAR system did not intervene at that moment.
