Great disappointment in Spain, as their national team failed to win the Nations League, losing in the final to Portugal on penalties, after regular time and an extra 30 minutes ended in a 2-2 draw.
Although the defeat was decided by "Russian roulette", in Spain they have made two "scapegoats", considering the two main culprits: striker Alvaro Morata and coach Luis de la Fuente.
Morata's introduction in extra time in the 111th minute in place of Ojarzabal was surprising both for the timing of his substitution and for the striker's performance on the pitch in those remaining minutes.
His inclusion in the squad had sparked a strong debate in Spain before the Nations League finals, where most of the Spanish fans and press had come out against the 32-year-old's selection, and last night's missed penalty added fuel to the fire, igniting even more criticism of him.
Many believe that his presence on the field was unnecessary and that there were other, more coherent options for the decisive part.
Luis de la Fuente also received heavy criticism for the way he made substitutions, especially when he removed key players like Lamin Jamal and Pedri while the match was still open.
