The British government's legal battle with former Chelsea president Roman Abramovich continues.
As reported by the media, the government is seeking the unblocking of around 3 billion euros resulting from the sale of the London club, which was planned to be sent as additional funds to Ukraine.
Led by Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the government forced Abramovich to sell the company after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Abramovich was described by the government as a "pro-Kremlin oligarch" and his assets were sanctioned.
The Russian businessman admitted that all net proceeds from the sale will be donated to benefit those affected by the war in Ukraine. More than three years have passed since the deal was concluded, but the money from it remains frozen in a British bank account linked to Abramovich, prompting the British government to admit they are prepared to take the former Chelsea chairman to court to recover the funds.
One of the main reasons for this impasse is the lack of an agreement between the British government and Abramovich himself on how this money should be spent. The Russian tycoon wants the 3 billion euros to be distributed to all victims of the war, including Russian soldiers, and wants it to be used for other charitable causes outside of Ukraine.
