Tom Hanks has reacted publicly for the first time regarding the accusations made by his daughter, Elizabeth Anne Hanks (EA Hanks), in her autobiographical book "The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road", where she recounts difficult experiences with her mother, the late actress Samantha Lewes (real name Susan Dillingham).
At the premiere of his latest film The Phoenician Scheme on May 26, Hanks spoke to Access Hollywood:
"I'm proud that my daughter had the strength and courage to address such a topic with such honesty. We all come from broken and fractured lives. She is extraordinary, always has been."
In her memoir, EA, 43, describes years filled with “emotional and physical abuse” from her mother, following her parents’ divorce in 1987. She writes of difficult living conditions, a dirty home, lack of food and her mother’s increasingly isolated behavior, who spent most of her time in bed reading the Bible.
She says that one night, after an episode of physical violence, she moved to Los Angeles in the middle of seventh grade, living with her father and visiting her mother only on weekends and during the summer.
During her senior year of high school, her mother called to tell her she was dying. EA notes that although she was never officially diagnosed, she believes her mother suffered from bipolar disorder and experienced episodes of paranoia and delusions.
Meanwhile, Tom Hanks stars in The Phoenician Scheme, a thriller starring Benicio Del Toro, Scarlett Johansson, Willem Dafoe and other notable actors. The film opens in select theaters on May 30 and will be released widely on June 6.
