The famous actor, protagonist of the film 'Home Alone', Macaulay Culkin, now 45 years old, has revealed that the iconic scene in the film "My Girl" (1991), where his character dies after being stung by bees, was filmed using thousands of live bees, a method that he says would not be allowed today for safety reasons.
During an appearance on the podcast "On Film… With Kevin McCarthy," Culkin revealed that the film crew decided to use real bees for the dramatic scene.
"I worked with bees," he said, confirming that they were released directly onto him to enhance the effect of the scene.
Culkin explained that the team had to make sure the bees didn't feel threatened. To do this, they applied a substance to the actor's fingertips that had a scent similar to that of a queen bee, to attract the bees to his hands in a controlled manner.
He stressed that the technique "would not be practiced today" due to contemporary safety standards.
To create the dramatic movement on screen, Culkin was instructed to "wave his hands in front of his face" so that the bees appeared as close to the camera as possible.
