An unusual incident has rocked traditional camel beauty contests in Oman, with organizers disqualifying 20 camels from a prestigious competition after inspectors discovered that some of the animals had undergone banned cosmetic procedures carried out by their owners to increase their chances of winning.
Camel beauty contests are among the most important cultural events in the Gulf countries, closely linked to the Bedouin heritage. Every year, thousands of camels take part in these competitions, where prizes reach millions of pounds. The evaluation is based not only on the appearance of the animals, but also on their character and behavior.
According to organizers, during inspections, it was discovered that some camels had been given Botox injections to plump their lips, while in other cases muscle relaxants were used to soften facial features. Silicone injections were also found to enlarge the hump, an element considered important in the aesthetic evaluation of camels.
The organizers emphasized that the rules for maintaining the integrity of the competition are very strict and any manipulation of the animals' appearance automatically leads to immediate disqualification.
The event has sparked reactions and debate in public opinion, bringing to attention the pressure to win in these competitions, where in addition to cultural prestige, large sums of money are also at stake.
