After a long wait, Shrek, Fiona and Donkey are ready to return to the big screen. The long-awaited first trailer for "Shrek 5" has been released, giving fans a taste of the new adventure that will arrive in theaters on June 30, 2027.
The new project features the iconic voices of Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey) and Cameron Diaz (Fiona). The cast is also joined by Zendaya, Marcelo Hernandez and Skyler Gizondo, who play Shrek and Fiona's now-grown children - Felicia, Fergus and Farkle.
What does the trailer show?
The video opens with Shrek and Donkey traveling to the Far Far Away kingdom. From the first few minutes, a new animation style is evident, to which Donkey makes a humorous comment, saying that "it's time for a change."
During the journey, Shrek's family encounters new characters and comical situations. They encounter a giant, the kingdom's police, and a snowman who is clearly reminiscent of Olaf from "Frozen." The trailer also features the return of Gingerbread, one of the saga's most beloved characters.
The final moment of the video finds Shrek, Fiona, their children, and Donkey in a prison cell, as the latter enthusiastically sings "Baby Come Back" and "Roxanne," to Shrek's obvious annoyance.
First sequel in 17 years
"Shrek 5" marks the return of the main series after a full 17 years, since the release of "Shrek Forever After" in 2010.
During this period, the Shrek universe expanded with two successful Puss in Boots films, including "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," which was well received by audiences and critics alike.
Fans divided over the new series
The trailer's release has sparked a lot of reactions on social media. Within hours, the video had racked up hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube, but not everyone is convinced by the visual changes.
"There have been four extremely successful films. Why did they have to change the animation style?" wrote one user on the X network.
Another commented: "This looks like it was created by artificial intelligence."
While another fan said: "There's something about the animation that doesn't convince me. I can't define it exactly, but it looks different than I expected."
However, there are those who prefer to wait for the full film before giving a final verdict. "I can get used to the new design if the story is good. I'm skeptical, but I remain curious," wrote one follower.
It remains to be seen whether "Shrek 5" will manage to recreate the magic of the films that transformed the green ogre into one of the most beloved characters in modern animation.
