One of the most powerful symbols of youth culture is closing its chapter. Entertainment giant Paramount Global has announced that it will cease broadcasting MTV's five iconic channels by December 31, 2025, marking the end of an era that inspired generations for decades.
The channels that will cease to be broadcast are MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live, initially in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and then in France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Australia and Brazil.
The decision comes as part of a new cost-cutting strategy by Paramount Global, following its merger with Skydance Media, but also reflects profound changes in the way people consume music in the digital age.
Traditional channels can no longer compete with YouTube, TikTok, Spotify or other streaming platforms, which have personalized the music experience and replaced the former sense of community that MTV offered.
MTV launched in 1981 in the US with the iconic video "Video Killed The Radio Star" by The Buggles, heralding the change it would bring to the music industry.
Since then, the channel has delivered moments that have gone down in history: the premiere of Michael Jackson's "Thriller," the acoustic performances of "MTV Unplugged," the iconic debates on "MTV News," and the launch of "The Real World," which paved the way for modern reality shows.
