The crowning of Indil Bilgen as Miss Turkey for 2024 has caused a stir in Turkey. The reason is that many feel that it has nothing to do with the prevailing standards of beauty. In fact, 24-year-old Bilgen's crowning sparked debate among social media users about beauty standards, sexism and the true essence of beauty. Celebrities from the Turkish state as well as many public figures have come to the defense of the crowned 24-year-old, emphasizing the importance of inner beauty, intelligence and individuality.
24-year-old Bilgen, 1.80 m tall, graduated from the Faculty of Medicine. However, what brought her to the center of criticism is the fact that she is the daughter of a diplomat, specifically the ambassador of Turkey to Ukraine.
Shortly after her coronation last Wednesday, many on social media questioned her suitability as a beauty queen and felt that her father's professional status influenced the result, with some even comparing her to characters from 70s Turkish films. , in which men disguise themselves as women.
However, there were not a few who came out publicly and supported the 24-year-old, condemning the harsh criticism and countless negative comments.
Popular Turkish singer Aleyna Tilki was among the first to voice her support. Tilki criticized conventional beauty standards, saying: “Although I don't generally support beauty pageants, I really admire women who are successful, have a story and are unique. She represents Turkish women with her quality beauty," she said.
Miss Turkey 2016 Ecem Uzgör, who had faced similar criticism, also expressed her solidarity with 24-year-old Bilge. "I stand by Idil", she declared.
However, not all celebrity reactions were supportive.
Turkish pop singer Demet Akalin questioned the crown. "Maybe she'll get the crown back or if there was something like a public vote... Honey, you might want to win, but this is a beauty pageant, not a favor," Akalin tweeted.
Also, the famous Turkish transgender singer Bülent Ersoy, who is often called "Diva" by her fans, stated during an interview: "Is this beautiful? She has masculine features," Ersoy said, adding: "Let's not hurt or upset the young girl."
After 24-year-old Idil Bilgen closed all comments on her social networks to soften the negative image, she said in a television appearance: "At a time when our country is experiencing tragedies such as violence against women and children, I attribute the negative comments to me for the fact that people have nothing better to do. They are people who express their opinion without knowing anything. I don't care about their comments."
