The winner of the auction was Justin Sun, a Chinese collector and founder of a cryptocurrency platform, who called the work "a cultural phenomenon that connects the worlds of art, memes and technology."
In a statement to the media, Sun emphasized that this banana represents an important symbol of our time and planned to consume it, describing it as part of a "unique artistic experience".
This is not the first time that Cattelan's works have provoked fiery reactions. "Comedian" debuted in 2019 at Art Basel Miami Beach, where it sold for $120,000. However, the exhibition became even more famous when performance artist David Datuna removed the banana from the wall and ate it in front of the astonished crowds, calling the act an artistic performance.
A conceptual work, "Comedian" includes a banana and ordinary duct tape, which are replaced with each new installation, according to the artist's instructions. The collector receives a certificate of authenticity and instructions for installing the work.
The latest sale marks a new chapter for the work, which many see as a challenge to perceptions of the value and purpose of art. As David Galperin, head of contemporary art for America, pointed out, "This is a work that challenges the boundaries of art and gives the public the opportunity to determine its true value."
