Kreshnik Çollaku, the Democratic Party's candidate for the Tirana district in the May 11 elections, has commented on the latest developments following the May 11 parliamentary elections.
Çollaku has said that he partially agrees with Berisha's position regarding the farce, but he does not spare criticism of the leader of the DP.
"I agree with Mr. Berisha's position that they were a farce, a repeated farce, sadly and tragically a farce repeated for the fourth time in Albania. Clearly, Edi Rama's majority has created a perfect, almost perfect industry of popular deviation," Çollaku said.
According to him, there is no logic for a majority to win a fourth term with a deeper result, while 'all the exponents are in prison or on trial'.
This is unreasonable. That's why I say it's a farce and a consolidated one.
Çollaku emphasized that the opposition should focus on two parallel battles, Berisha's process for identifying the facts, and a critical internal analysis.
"The opposition must fight two battles, the first for what it has started. I also support this process of Mr. Berisha, of identifying the facts, not with political rhetoric, not with wishes. We need evidence and facts and administration of the facts, but also public denunciation or those with an international mandate. The second is a critical internal analysis of where we lost and where we failed in order to fail for the fourth time the manipulation of Edi Rama," said Çollaku.
He criticized the opposition's decision to vote on changes to the Electoral Code.
"I have warned that with the approval of this electoral code, the opposition would lose at least 12 mandates, due to its political situation and because of the Code. In my opinion, the opposition's fatal mistake is that it voted for the changes to the Code," Çollaku continued.
Çollaku also commented on developments within political parties after the elections, emphasizing that 'the war has begun even within the SP'.
"They were initiating criminal proceedings against each other. Even a text message from Rama to the group of deputies extinguished everything. Even in the DP, Berisha did it through authority, he advised but no one listened, they started the war against themselves. In the SP, Rama gathered them, or rather not Rama, the prime minister," said Çollaku.
Regarding the DP's loss in the elections, he said that Berisha appealed for a block vote, but was not heard.
"Why were we more successful in 2021? Because that Electoral Code made the entire team work for a massive vote. This Code has made over two mandates, has forgiven 12 mandates to Rama and left room for Rama to intervene in the internal race of DP candidates," Çollaku continued.
On the other hand, he emphasized that the Code was designed for the careers of a small group of individuals.
"The code was designed to secure the careers of 20 people and I'm sorry to say that he thought so and Berisha fell into this trap. This is a code that destroys the battle of strength in a group," said Çollaku.
According to him, the DP candidates did not work as a group and no one took responsibility.
"No opposition candidate worked in a group. No DP candidate could work in a group. They must definitely be held responsible, all the leaders of the DP, because they did not recognize the farce and the reality. They did not even denounce it. They would come out in the morning saying that the opposition won, the votes are in the box and then what happened," said Çollaku.
He considered the votes as Berisha's personal.
"These are Sali Berisha's personal votes, that's what I think. He got them in '97, he got them in 2001 against the courts. No one in the DP has lifted a finger to add this vote. They have simply used mechanisms within the DP to get votes from Berisha," said Çollaku.
In conclusion, he called for a profound reform of the party.
"The Democratic Party cannot be treated as a parasitic party, waiting for what Sali Berisha says and does. The DP must read itself," concluded Çollaku.
