After more than two years without an ambassador, the US President selects a former senior army general to represent the US in Albania.
US President Donald Trump has selected the name of the new United States ambassador to Tirana.
The US Embassy has been without an ambassador for nearly 3 years and today Trump nominated retired General Eric Wendt as Yuri Kim's successor. His name has been sent to the Senate and if approved there, the general is expected to be stationed in Tirana.
Eric P. Wendt is a retired U.S. Army lieutenant general who most recently served as the 5th commander of NATO Special Operations Command, a position he completed in January 2021.
During his career, Wendt has held several important positions in the US military and international structures. He served as the US Security Coordinator for the Israeli-Palestinian Authority from 2017 to 2019, as the chief of staff of the US Pacific Command, and in other leadership roles in special operations, including Korea and Afghanistan.
Wendt graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a degree in law and society and then completed a master's degree in national security affairs from the Naval Postgraduate School. He retired from the military in March 2021 after more than 34 years of service, including more than 30 years in special forces as a Green Beret. He speaks several foreign languages, including Arabic and Korean.
Earlier, in 2020, President Trump had nominated him as ambassador to Qatar, but his candidacy was not confirmed by the Senate before the end of the then-Congress term.
The US embassy in Tirana has been without an ambassador for almost 3 years. In June 2023, Yuri Kim left Albania and since then, there have only been special envoys.
During Biden's presidency, he nominated David J. Kostelancik for this post. But his candidacy dragged on until it "burned out". He appeared before the Senate, but his name failed to be put to a vote. Since the summer of 2023, Albanian politics has been "dancing", as we all know the importance of the US embassy. Everyone lined up in front of Ambassador Yuri Kim or her predecessors. But during the time there have been envoys, the weight of the embassy has decreased. But it seems that the situation will change.
