American actor Robert Duvall, winner of an Oscar for the film Tender Mercies and nominated for memorable roles in productions such as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now and The Great Santini, has died at the age of 95.
The news was announced by his wife, Luciana Duvall, through a statement published on Facebook.
Robert Duvall is considered one of the most important figures in American cinema of the second half of the 20th century. Born on January 5, 1931 in California, he studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York, where he was a classmate of Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman.
He began his career in theater, but became known to the general public with the role of Tom Hagen in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather (1972), a role that earned him his first Oscar nomination. He later rose to prominence with his portrayal of Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore in Apocalypse Now (1979), a role that remains one of the most iconic in the history of cinema.
In 1984, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Tender Mercies, in which he played a country singer in decline, in a performance praised for its realism and emotional depth. He received several other Oscar nominations throughout his career.
Duvall was praised for his natural, understated acting style, which influenced a generation of actors, including Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, and Gene Hackman. In addition to acting, he also worked as a screenwriter and director, including The Apostle (1997), which he wrote, directed, and starred in, earning him another Oscar nomination.
