The Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction has sentenced Kristian Cenaj, accused of the murder of Mariglen Gjonaj, a 16-year-old who disappeared in 2017, to life imprisonment.
According to the court ruling, Cenaj was found guilty of "theft resulting in death" after killing the teenager following a robbery for a Rolex watch.
Gjonaj's lifeless body was found buried in the Fushë Kuqe area, seven years after his disappearance.
The Appeal Decision is the same as that given by the Lezha Judicial District Court.
Kristjan Cenaj was arrested in October 2022, 5 years after committing the crime. The first to suspect that Mariglen Gjonaj had killed Kristjan Cenaj was the 16-year-old's mother.
Liljana Gjonaj stated in 2015 that the last person her son had been with was Kristjan Cenaj. The teenager's mother said that she learned from the testimonies of her fellow villagers that they had seen her son that day accompanied by a young man from Mamurras.
In 2015, she filed a police report but stated that her son's disappearance was registered as a runaway. She suspected that the 16-year-old was taken hostage or mistreated in order to be robbed because he had valuables and jewelry with him.
"He left in the morning, came out at 8, he didn't come to me at 5 in the evening, nor at lunch. He was with two people who were in the car the last time. The last person he was with is Kristjan Cenaj from this village. If those people have taken him hostage, let him go. Let them take the gold, we forgive them everything, just bring my son back to his feet and home," Liljana Gjonaj declared in 2015.
