AMA appeals to the media: Do not publish the video of Martin Can's murder!

The Chairperson of the Audiovisual Media Authority (AMA), Armela Krasniqi, has asked the media to stop publishing the video of Martin Cani's murder.

According to her, the publication of these images not only violates human ethics, but is also contrary to professional codes and applicable legislation.

I am following with great concern the flow and speed of the distribution of a video that takes us back to the serious incident that occurred in the capital, in November of last year, the victim of which was a 14-year-old boy. Some media outlets are rushing to publish footage of the moment before and after his murder.

I understand the high level of public sensitivity about the event, which is a sufficient motivation for media professionals in general, and audiovisual professionals in particular, who have informed and continue to be interested in the event or the investigation that followed it. I also understand their good will to help clarify the circumstances of the event.

But BEWARE!

The race for visibility should never be put before ethics and the implementation of the law, which is completely clear and strict in this regard. The publication of such images constitutes abuse, with the aim of exploiting the event from a sensational perspective, leaving behind its human side. In the name of the highest interest of the child, respect for the pain of the family, the sensitivity of the entire Albanian public opinion and the comprehensive social obligation, I call on every OSHMA not to broadcast such images.

Dear colleagues!

Maintain ethics!

Respect the pain of losing a child!

Respect professional codes and the law!

The AMA is pursuing every case and every violation will be dealt with according to applicable legislation, but my call today goes out to all media professionals to not allow a violation that costs a lot.

I remain hopeful that the reaction of my colleagues who direct the news editions and not only, will be as it has been so far: fast, responsible and in accordance with human conscience, professional ethics, but also with the standards provided for in the law "On Audiovisual Media in the Republic of Albania" as amended, in the Broadcasting Code and other by-laws in force.
