Police officers risked their lives while pursuing a 32-year-old Albanian man with a criminal record who was driving under the influence of drugs, and were injured at the end of the operation, which also cost them the destruction of two police vehicles.
During the search, a quantity of cocaine and over 8 thousand euros in cash were found on the young man, while he had a search warrant and was also deported from the country, but had entered illegally afterwards.
The incident took place yesterday evening, in the area of Ponte San Giovanni and Città di Castello in Italy. The Albanian will be charged with possession of narcotics with intent to distribute, resisting a public officer, assault, failure to comply with a re-entry order and driving under the influence of narcotics.
The young man was initially spotted driving along the SS “3 bis” state road near the Città di Castello exit.
He disobeyed the officers' order to stop and fled in the direction of Perugia. Pursued by other local teams that had arrived to help, the suspect immediately took evasive maneuvers that endangered the safety of others, hitting two carabinieri vehicles one after the other and continuing to flee until he got off the road.
The 32-year-old was immediately stopped by the carabinieri as he tried to flee, but initially resisted, before being neutralized. After conducting a personal and vehicle search, 21 grams of cocaine were found hidden on him, which were seized along with 8,500 euros in cash, believed to be the possible proceeds of crime.
Following the investigation and medical examinations, the officers suffered minor injuries, as did the 32-year-old, who, after undergoing toxicology tests, was found to have been driving under the influence of drugs.
Regarding the previous criminal past, the investigations carried out by the Carabinieri revealed that the young man was the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the Forlì Public Prosecutor's Office for similar and serious criminal conduct against traffic police personnel in Fano, on 7 November 2019.
He left the scene after causing traffic accidents and injuries, some very serious, to citizens. The Albanian had also violated the ban on re-entry into Italy. After completing the required formalities, the arrested person was sent to the Perugia-Capanne prison.
