Today's elections in Kosovo "elect" the next government of Kosovo

The outcome of tonight's elections is more important for forging a new opposition alliance based on new tests than for local government itself in Kosovo.

The local elections that just concluded in Kosovo are important not so much for the mayors who will lead the municipalities in Kosovo, but for the new governing coalition in Kosovo, as they will be a new electoral test in the protracted 8-month maneuvers to form a government after the February elections.

The crisis of government formation in Kosovo is perhaps one of the longest crises in the world regarding the change of power after elections, due to the lack of will to submit to democratic rules.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti refused to negotiate a post-election coalition after failing to secure over 50 percent of the vote and plunged the country into a constitutional procedural crisis by remaining unelected prime minister for 8 months, with the goal of having him in office as prime minister in today's elections. This objective has now been achieved, but not the electoral objectives.

The first exit poll shows that Vetëvendosje is very likely not to win any municipalities in the first round, while at least four municipalities will be won directly by LDK and PDK.

The rest will go to the runoff, and if the opposition coalition PDK-LDK, including AAK, manages to overcome their problems and support each other in the runoff, they have a chance of leaving Vetëvendosje with only one or no municipalities won.

For this reason, the outcome of tonight's elections is more important for forging a new opposition alliance based on new tests, than for local government in Kosovo itself.

During this month, this result will be the test that will give new energy to the creation of a coalition government, or the announcement of early elections, based, among other things, on this result.

This makes these local elections the ones with the greatest political importance than other elections, also because Prime Minister Kurti himself consciously worked not to share power with others or hand it over until these elections, even though it is a spectacular failure of Kosovo's ability to build its state.

The result, which is expected to be made public by midnight, will serve to encourage the opposition to come together for new elections, or to encourage Albin Kurti to continue to insist on governing Kosovo alone, even though he does not have the necessary votes for prime minister.
