The doctrine drafted several decades ago by Tel Aviv to overcome regional isolation is today taking the form of a diverse concessionary presence in strategic sectors...

For over a month now, just a few steps from our house, thousands of protesters have been filling the streets of Tirana, demanding the resignation of Edi Rama, whom they accuse of corruption and high treason. The slogan is: "Albania is not for sale!".
The Albanian prime minister threatens repressive measures, while accusing Moscow and Tehran of fomenting unrest. The dispute is related to the operation through which Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law, a close friend of Netanyahu and business partner with the Rothschild bankers, the tycoon's creditors, after they saved his real estate empire from bankruptcy, intends to buy the island of Sazan for $4 million, to build a luxury resort there co-financed with capital from Qatar, distributed among six Dutch companies.
For the moment, the protest has managed to secure the suspension of the sale, but continues with the aim of repealing the law that allows such speculation on public property. But, beyond the legal issue, the joint observation of the entities involved and the position of the island, at the geostrategic intersection of major interests, offers an insight into trends that, without a doubt, also concern Italy.
The Italian occupation (1939-1943) transformed Sazan into a military base on the Otranto Channel, the gateway between the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. The Albanian communist government further strengthened the fortifications, building thousands of anti-nuclear bunkers and a 16-kilometer network of tunnels, while the Soviet Union granted a submarine base in the bay opposite Vlora.
But today, control of this maritime segment is even more valuable. Access management is linked to flows to and from ports like Trieste, the terminal of the Silk Road (IMEC) between India, the Middle East and Europe, announced by Joe Biden at the 2023 G20 summit to counter the Chinese Silk Road (which also included the port of Trieste before Rome withdrew at the request of Washington).
Today the project is strongly supported by Israel, which aims to take on the role of a land route hub that would bypass the Strait of Hormuz. The TAP also passes through the same area of Otranto, with an exit in Melendugno (Lecce), the southern branch of the gas corridor between Azerbaijan and Europe.
EastMed, the gas pipeline designed by the US in 2019 to bring gas from the Eastern Mediterranean fields, including those opposite the Gaza Strip, to Europe, must also pass through the Canal.
Suspended by Biden after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, in order not to ruin relations with Turkey in the confrontation with Russia, today the project returns to the top of the Israeli agenda, which believes in the benefits that the so-called "Peace Board" can bring.
This includes the Kushner family, financiers of Chabad Lubavitch, the "Hasidic current of universal messianic Israel", a spiritual revival movement of Orthodox Judaism, born in the 18th century, based on the mysticism and charismatic leadership of the Rebbes. But, beyond the eschatological aspect, the operation sheds light on a possible penetration of American and Israeli capital in the Balkans, which compete with the increasingly specialized Turkish presence in the cybersecurity and military technology sectors.
In particular, Albania led by Rama, a member of the "Peace Board", serves as a springboard towards the West for the presence of the Tel Aviv government, now active also through the purchase of land in Salento, thanks to investments by companies co-financed with Israeli capital for the installation of photovoltaic plants and relevant networks.
And this phenomenon is not limited to Puglia. Last summer, controversy erupted in the local media of the Marche region over the holidays, conducted under heavy security measures, offered in Porto San Giorgio and the surrounding areas to IDF officers, the Israeli army, who were suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after military operations in Gaza.
Today the next step is in Valsesia, where the "Baita Project" aims to repopulate mountain villages, thanks to the facilities offered to around 250 Israeli citizens willing to move there, with the prospect of creating a pole for the development of artificial intelligence and information technology security, linked to the structures of the mother country.
And all this at a time when the hospitality offered by local residents to the families from Gaza has not materialized, since they have not arrived. These are part of a broader plan that describes the so-called "Periphery Strategy", the doctrine drawn up several decades ago by Tel Aviv, then to overcome regional isolation.
Today it is ready to take the form of a more diverse concessionary presence in strategic sectors. In conclusion, Albanian society has the burden and honor to convey beyond its borders an exemplary signal of this awareness: to restore to democratic sovereignty the right to make its voice heard, so that it does not end up reduced to a passive spectator./ Pamphlet from “Agensir.it”
