After years of high prices on the coast, which hit domestic and foreign tourism, the government has decided to impose direct control over beach fees.
With a new decision, which comes into effect for the 2024 season, each municipality will set the maximum allowed prices for sun loungers and beach services, putting an end to abuses that have prompted massive complaints from citizens and tourists.
Municipal councils will be required to approve ceiling prices for each coastal zone before the start of the season. In the absence of this decision, existing contracts between the municipality and operators will apply, but with predetermined prices. Entities that violate tariff limits will lose the right to manage the zone, in addition to administrative fines.
The government has also decided that public beaches managed by municipalities themselves will no longer be allowed to be rented out to private individuals. They will remain accessible at controlled prices for all vacationers. The model will initially be launched in Dhërmi and Ksamil, two of the areas most affected by artificially inflated prices, where Prime Minister Edi Rama himself announced direct management by municipalities.
For the first time, municipalities will be obliged to publish in advance the maximum permitted noise level for each beach, as part of control over the quality of service and the protection of vacationers.
This decision comes after Rama's direct criticism of the "excessive greed" of tourist operators, who took advantage of the lack of control to set prices that drove tourists away from Albania. "Whoever continues with the old logic will remain outside the scheme," was the latest warning from the head of government.
